The Power of One, written  by Bryce Courtenay became the first book of my 2012 reading challenge. I already owned the book for more than a year so it was about time I would finish it once and for all. The story is about Peekay, a young boy who grows up in Africa with a dream of becoming the welterweight champion of the world. This is not a book about boxing, it’s a book about the journey Peekay has to go through to achieve his goal.

First with your head and then with your heart..

I have to say I loved the book. I liked how it would be funny and sometimes very bizarre while the next chapter would be so sad and emotional. The book is filled with wonderful characters who surround Peekay. All of them have some sort of impact on Peekay’s life.

The biggest reason I liked the book is the friendship and adventures Peekay has with his best friend Doc. Doc, who is an old German living in Africa to study the cactus takes Peekay under his wings and learns him the values of life.

It sure was an amazing journey and I’m very glad I purchased the book, even though it took more than a year for me to start reading it. This shows that most of our bookshelf’s still have some hidden treasures.
